Gunn, J. (Director). (2014). Guardians of the
Galaxy [Motion Picture].
Groot, played by Vin Diesel, is one of the several main characters in Guardians of the Galaxy. He is
a tree-like alien and a companion to Rocket Raccoon, another main character in the feature film. He
has the power to manipulate his growth and regeneration. Yet, he is the most lovable and kind
character of the main cast.
Groot resembles the archetype of the gentle giant, because his immense strength is juxtaposed by his
kindness. This archetype makes his character very appealing to audiences, and supplies the film with
comic relief. Rocket Raccoon is similarly juxtaposed with physical capabilities and personality traits.
He is the weakest among the main cast, but that is juxtaposed by his abrasive attitude and
intelligence. The mirroring traits of Groot and Rocket Raccoon and heartwarming relationship
appeals to the film's audience.

Liked how you mentioned a very apparent archetype present in the film, and using the lovable character, groot, was a smart choice since he proved to be very popular among the marvel audience. I also liked the juxtaposition of two likeable characters in the movie and describing why their juxtaposition works so well to create positive audience reaction. However, you should have mentioned more archetypes than just one. Many other archetypes were present in the film such as starlord's "hero/bad-ass" archetype. You could describe the archetypes of multiple characters and describe why all of them put together are crucial in developing a sci-fi action film such as Guardians of the Galaxy.
ReplyDeleteWhen I watched Guardians of the Galaxy, I did not realize these archetypes. Now that you mention their archetypes in this post, I can now see where you are coming from. I believe that they are found to very appealing to the audience because Groot and Rocket Raccoon are two completely different characters who surprise the audience when they are first introduced. Your juxtapositions reflect this viewpoint. By stating that Groot is a gentle giant and that Rocket Raccoon is a small abrasive animal, it can be said that they are appealing because they represent a "dynamic duo." Dynamic duos are sometimes very crucial to action movies, especially for Marvel. Audiences like to see partners able to come out on top and it brings in views. It is able to attract multiple audiences. Very good work and nice image of Groot!
ReplyDeleteI love the theme of your blog! As an avid Marvel fan, it just excites me to see a different perspective on Marvel's production. You see, when I watched Guardian's of the Galaxy, I breezed past the concepts of archetypes and how the film directors juxtaposed them to create such a "marvel"ous film! Groot is a gentle giant like you stated, and with his foil character and companion Rocket, they dominate the heart of the film and the heart of the audience. Thank you for informing and enlightening me!
